About Us

Who Are We?

The Indian River Dog Training Club, Inc. (IRDTC), is a 501(c)4 not-for-profit corporation formed in November of 1975, sanctioned by the State of Florida, and licensed by the American Kennel Club. The club's indoor, climate-controlled facility is located just off Palm Bay Road at 1465 Clearmont St. NE, Unit B, in Palm Bay, Florida.

Anyone can take classes or enter club events, but becoming a member makes you part of the IRDTC family, a community of dog training enthusiasts who not only enjoy getting together to train and have fun with their own canine companions, but who also work hard to help others in the community learn how to train (and possibly compete with) their dogs as well. Members also give their time to hosting the various trials, shows, and other special events that bring high-level competitive events to our local area several times each year. In return, members have the opportunity to take classes at discounted prices and have access to a really nice, indoor, climate-controlled facility where they can train their dogs.

If you're interested in becoming a member and would like to learn more about it, check out the "Become a Member" section on the Resources page.

Opportunities to Train

IRDTC offers a variety of training classes, geared both towards pet parents and those who are thinking about competing:

  • Obedience Classes at all levels, whether you just want a well-behaved canine companion or are hoping to compete as a dog and handler team.
  • AKC STAR Puppy classes, so you can help your puppy get a good start in life.
  • And lots of extras--Conformation Handling, Teacup Agility, AKC Rally, Tricks, and RallyFree--for those who are ready to go beyond the basics and start having some real fun!

Opportunities to Compete

IRDTC provides various local opportunities to compete in AKC Obedience & Rally, AKC Agility, and Teacup Agility throughout the year:

  • AKC Obedience and Rally Trials at the Melbourne Auditorium in Melbourne, FL, usually the last weekend in February and the last weekend in July.
  • AKC Agility Trials three times a year, usually in February, May, and November, at the Indian River Fairgrounds in Vero Beach, FL.
  • TDAA Teacup Agility trials at its facility in Palm Bay (usually in November).

Stop by and visit!

If you'd like to see IRDTC's facility or see what any of our classes are like before you enroll in one, you are certainly welcome to stop by and visit.  It would be best to leave your furry friend at home, though, and it would be great if you could e-mail or call first to let us know you'll be coming. And be sure to let us know you're there when you arrive so we can say "Hello" and answer any questions you might have! :-)
