More About the AKC Rally

An AKC Rally trial is a dog sport that involves a handler and dog team navigating a course of numbered signs, each indicating a specific obedience skill to be performed. It's a fun and engaging way to build the bond between dog and handler, improve obedience skills, and boost the dog's confidence. The sport is open to all dogs, purebred or mixed breed, six months or older, with different levels of competition based on experience and skill.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

What happens at a Rally trial?

Course:
Judges design courses with 10-20 signs, each displaying a different rally skill according to the American Kennel Club.

Skills:
Skills range from simple heeling and turns to more advanced exercises like jumps and pivots, depending on the level.

Communication:
Handlers can encourage their dogs with verbal praise, hand signals, and body language, but touching the dog is not allowed.

Scoring:
Teams are judged on their teamwork, execution of skills, and overall performance.

Levels:
Novice (on-leash), Intermediate (on-leash), Advanced, Excellent, and Master (off-leash).

Titles:
Earning qualifying scores at each level leads to titles like RN (Rally Novice), RA (Rally Advanced), RE (Rally Excellent), and RAE (Rally Advanced Excellent).
