AKC Scent Class - Skills & Drills

If you are registered for any of the Saturday scent classes, you can NOT take this class.

Prerequisite: Teams must have taken a beginner/imprinting class in order to register for this class; this is not a class for beginners.

Class Details:

This class will offer one topic per class. During the class, teams will be participating even when they are not running their dog by videoing each other, giving input on each team’s performance, preparing to go into the ring and providing assistance to instructors/handlers as needed.

Topics covered can be:

• Get out of obedience handling/training mode – get dog to work somewhere else on other than on the left side in heeling mode.

• Air flow – helium balloons set out demonstrate how airflow of the room affects scent cone; balloons also serve as distractions for working dog.

• Time awareness – set up big clock/have a person calling out 30-second increments so as to make teams to be aware of hides and time; teams will work on developing starting rituals.

• Have a different person handle your dog so you can see how your dog is working and learn how your dog alerts (nose to tail).

• Search off ground – set up all hides off the ground; cords will be used to string up hides or use leash tree to hang cups off the ground.

• Keep dog working – leash handling, footwork, talking/encouraging the dog to keep working.


All Dogs must be crated when not working in the ring.
